LS2G-6K is the mid-size sensor in our linescan family lineup, offering a line resolution of 6640 at 5um pitch in nominal mode without interpolation. In 7um mode the sensor offers a maximum line resolution of 4740 pixels while when the 3.5um pixel lines are used the sensor offers 8776 of maximum line resolution. The LS2G-6K sensor offers an integrated, 3.5um, 5 um, 7 um, and 10 um pixel array technology in one package and combined with charge-domain binning features leading to extremely versatile use-case scenarios.
Selection of lines
The selection of lines offered by LS2G-6K with 3.5um, 5um, 7um, and 10um pixel pitch is shown on the left. As such this pixel arrangement allows the user to configure various horizontal line resolutions by using one hardware and sensor variation.
The diagram shown to the left presents the physical lines available in the LS2G sensors. The user can select from a total of 32 lines with different properties. Some imaging mode application examples amongst others are:
Rows 29 – 30 contain 7um clear pixel pitch line design.
Rows 25 – 26, and 27 – 28 contain lines at 3.5um pixel pitch. The row pairs 25-26 and 27-28 are half-pitch shifted to enable hyper-resolution imaging inspection systems.
Rows 20 – 24 provide R,G,B, and Clear lines at 7um pixel pitch for reduced resolution and lens formats with relaxed MTF requirements.
Rows 18 – 19 offer NIR-enhanced sensitivity for beyond visible spectral imaging.
Rows 14 – 17 with 5um pixels and staggered half-pitch shift can be employed for 2x hyper resolution imaging.
Rows 6 – 13 offer 5um pixels pitch with double row positioning. This configuration gives the user ability to perform 2x Digital Time Delay Integration (TDI) imaging with a single continuous scan step.
Rows 0 – 5 offer 5um pixel pitch with Clear, and RGB color filters for a typical single or multi-line scan applicaiton.
Visible and NIR enhanced options
LS2G is offered in a variant with enhanced NIR capabilities. The NIR option offers sharp NIR cutoff applied to the visible rows and a clear NIR-pass only applied to the NIR-enhanced rows. This enables the user to combine multi-line RGB+NIR channels and enable multiband scanning beyond the visible wavelength range. The method is proven effective and when combined with visible row readout enhances the overall scene. Depending on application demands the NIR-enhanced option offers many advantages in scene recognition.
Summary table of horizontal resolution modes
Shown below is a summary table of the base possible horizontal resolution modes which are delivered direct as raw image data.
Line Resolution | Active Pixels | Effective Pixel Area | Optical Black Reference Pixels | Available Lines |
---|---|---|---|---|
8K | 8776 | 3.5 um | 192 (left) + 194 (right) | 2 rows |
6K | 6144 | 5 um | 128 (left) + 128 (right) | 20 rows (RGBW+NIR) |
4K | 4388 | 7 um | 96 (left) + 97 (right) | 7 rows (RGBW) |
3K | 3072 | 10 um | 64 (left) + 64 (right) | 4 rows (RGBW) |
Additionally by using the 1/2 and 1/4 pitch pixel offset lines the user can theoretically achieve 16 K pixel line resolution using interpolation processing techniques. Off-chip digital TDI of up-to 2x is also possible with the noise floor delivered from the sensor.
Readout electronics
The LS2G-6K sensor delivers base scanning speeds from 250 kHz in single-line scanning mode at 12-bit resolution. Further scan rate increase is achieved by switching to 10-bit or 8-bit mode for increased scan speeds of over 90 kHz in 3-line scan mode. Both completely external timing control and automatic line read triggering is possible with the sensor and is adjusted in correspondence with the application. There is no limitation in amount of rows to be read out, and depending on the application 3, 4, or even 6 or 8-line shuttered mode is possible.
The actual ADC resolution and conversion time can be configured by means of re-programming the internal sequencer of the sensor, which is by default set at the highest ADC count that can be generated for each of the reset and signal conversions. The sensor performs built-in digital CDS to cancel kTC noise and pixel output drifts. Available ADC resolutions are 12-bit, 10-bit, and 8-bit. Depending on desired sensor speed the user can trade more resolution for speed and the opposite. The sensor clock is externally provided in a single-channel LVDS form and can be scaled between 240 and 450 MHz. LS2G-6K provides up to 128 channels for active line data and fixed 2 channels for left and right end element optical black data. To simplify serialization in high clock rates >400 MHz output deserialization clock channels with jitter correlation are available per every 16 DDR channels. This allows easy deserialization input conditions for a robust output data link.
The sensor is supplied via the two headboard connectors and requires + 3.3V for analog and pixel supply, and +1.5 V digital and IO power. To improve noise performance, but not mandatory, the user can provide separate power supplies to the pixel, analog, ADC, and IO modules, over the external headboard connector.
